Anheuser-Busch Transitioning Dedicated Fleet to RNG as Part of Ongoing Leadership in Sustainable Logistics
As part of its ongoing commitment to sustainable logistics and reducing carbon emissions, Anheuser-Busch announced today that it is transitioning more than 180 trucks – representing approximately 30% of its dedicated fleet – to Renewable Natural Gas (RNG).
In 2014 and 2015, Anheuser-Busch converted 160 diesel-fueled trucks in Houston and St. Louis to fleets powered by Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) engines. As the next step to achieve its 2025 sustainability goal of reducing carbon emissions across its value chain by 25% by 2025, the brewer will be expanding this fleet and investing in technology to transition to cleaner-burning renewable natural gas.

Black Hills Utilities Seeing Decarbonization Pressure in Some Service Areas
While acknowledging uncertainty for the rest of the year, Rapid City, SD-based Black Hills Corp. executives reported lighter impacts from Covid-19 in the eight-state utility service territories.
The corporate-wide $2.7 billion, five-year capital expenditure program is moving along, and growth in customers and gross margins for the natural gas and electric utilities have continued in the midst of operational changes prompted by the coronavirus pandemic, CEO Linn Evans said during a 2Q2020 earnings conference call on Tuesday.
Black Hills utilities are eyeing growth in renewable natural gas (RNG) and the renewable-generated electricity program, he said.

NW Natural’s Customer Base Expanding Despite Pandemic, with RNG Opportunities Eyed
Portland, OR-based NW Natural executives on Friday talked up prospects in the renewable natural gas (RNG) sector and the growth in the customer base, which has come despite depressed demand from Covid-19.
CEO David Anderson during the second quarter conference call said construction and conversions have led to adding more than 13,000 customers during the past 12 months, equating to an annual growth rate of 1.7%.
“While we can’t predict the full economic effect of the pandemic, we continue to see mitigating factors for our resilient business model,” Anderson said.

California Incentives Spur Dairy Manure Methane Digester Developments
State incentives designed to help California’s dairy industry reduce methane emissions have led to a spike in the number of manure digester developments underway on California dairies.
According to a new report from CoBank’s Knowledge Exchange, the wave of digester developments on California dairy farms has spurred interest in the technology nationwide.
California has legislated a 40% reduction in manure methane emissions by 2030 from its largest source: 1.4 million dairy cows.
One of the means of achieving that goal has been on-farm dairy manure methane digesters. Digesters not only help reduce dairy manure methane emissions, they capture renewable natural gas.

Alberta Lethbridge Bio-waste Facility to Produce RNG
The Lethbridge facility had been generating electricity from manure, dead stock and food processing waste
The green biodigesting domes on the east side of Lethbridge have been producing electricity from biological waste materials since 2013. Now they are poised to produce renewable natural gas instead.
Lethbridge Biogas is planning a $7 million expansion that will allow it to produce natural gas that will enter ATCO’s natural gas grid and be supplied to FortisBC under a long-term agreement.

Archaea Energy and Rumpke Break Ground on Landfill Gas-to-Energy Facility
Rumpke Waste & Recycling is partnering with Archaea Energy to turn Southern Indiana’s trash into a renewable energy source.
The two companies recently broke ground on a landfill-gas-to-energy plant at Rumpke’s Medora Landfill. Rumpke and Archaea expect to complete construction and open the new plant by the end of 2021. Ultimately, the new facility will convert gases produced from decomposing garbage into useable natural gas piped to natural gas customers via local pipelines.

Cap-and-Trade, Low Carbon Fuel Standard programs are the Main Sources of Revenue for Dairy Digester Projects
“Dairy producers outside of California may be anticipating future environmental mandates in their own states,” said Tanner Ehmke, manager of CoBank’s Knowledge Exchange division. “But the possibility of financial incentives and energy market opportunities are what’s capturing attention.”

BP Targets $5B Annual Renewables Spending, 50 GW by 2030
Fossil fuel companies are increasingly diversifying their investments as pressure mounts for companies to mitigate their carbon footprint. The "stark truth" is that companies need to become more sustainable, or risk being left behind, bp chairman Helge Lund said during the company's Q2 earnings call.
"Energy markets have begun the process of fundamental, lasting change, shifting increasingly towards low carbon and renewables," he said. But although the company says it will pivot from an international oil company to an "integrated energy company" in the next decade, its oil investments will not weaken completely, he said.

MORC Keeps Waste out of Landfills Thanks to Anaerobic Digestion
The Muscatine Organic Recycling Center (MORC) has been in operation at the Muscatine Transfer Station since December 2019, and is making an impact on the reduction of organic waste being sent to area landfills including the Muscatine County Landfill.
“We have learned a lot in the last six months,” Jon Koch, Water and Resource Recovery Facility (WRRF) Director, said. “And business continues to grow.”
Koch was instrumental in the development of the Muscatine Area Resource Recovery for Vehicles and Energy (MARRVE) program that led to the establishment of MORC. The primary goal of MARRVE is to receive organic waste and convert that waste into renewable natural gas that can be used by Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles.
