Cap-and-Trade, Low Carbon Fuel Standard programs are the Main Sources of Revenue for Dairy Digester Projects

State incentives designed to help California’s dairy industry reduce methane emissions have led to a spike in the number of manure digester developments underway on California dairies. According to a new report from CoBank’s Knowledge Exchange, the wave of digester developments on California dairy farms has spurred interest in the technology nationwide.

“Dairy producers outside of California may be anticipating future environmental mandates in their own states,” said Tanner Ehmke, manager of CoBank’s Knowledge Exchange division. “But the possibility of financial incentives and energy market opportunities are what’s capturing attention.”

BP Targets $5B Annual Renewables Spending, 50 GW by 2030

Fossil fuel companies are increasingly diversifying their investments as pressure mounts for companies to mitigate their carbon footprint. The "stark truth" is that companies need to become more sustainable, or risk being left behind, bp chairman Helge Lund said during the company's Q2 earnings call.

"Energy markets have begun the process of fundamental, lasting change, shifting increasingly towards low carbon and renewables," he said. But although the company says it will pivot from an international oil company to an "integrated energy company" in the next decade, its oil investments will not weaken completely, he said.

MORC Keeps Waste out of Landfills Thanks to Anaerobic Digestion

The Muscatine Organic Recycling Center (MORC) has been in operation at the Muscatine Transfer Station since December 2019, and is making an impact on the reduction of organic waste being sent to area landfills including the Muscatine County Landfill.

“We have learned a lot in the last six months,” Jon Koch, Water and Resource Recovery Facility (WRRF) Director, said. “And business continues to grow.”

Koch was instrumental in the development of the Muscatine Area Resource Recovery for Vehicles and Energy (MARRVE) program that led to the establishment of MORC. The primary goal of MARRVE is to receive organic waste and convert that waste into renewable natural gas that can be used by Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles.
