Greenlane Biogas North America Ltd. Signed $15.2 million in New Supply Contracts

The first contract, worth $12.6 million, is for the supply of biogas upgrading and related equipment for a multi-location dairy farm cluster located in California. Greenlane’s biogas upgrading systems will create clean renewable natural gas for injection into the local gas distribution network owned and operated by Pacific Gas and Electric Company. The second contract, worth $2.6 million, is part of the same cluster, however, is subject to final financing approval. The name of purchaser is being withheld at this time.

“This is a major contract win for us, representing over 185% of 2019’s revenue, for a showcase project in the California dairy industry that will meaningfully contribute toward the State’s greenhouse gas reduction targets,” said Brad Douville, president & CEO of Greenlane. “This is Greenlane’s fourth and largest project to-date to upgrade biogas to high quality RNG for injection into the California gas pipeline system. We’re working with a high caliber team including a dynamic project developer and one of the largest and most experienced players in the RNG industry in the US. We are proud to have been selected as the technology provider for this exciting and important project.”

Feeding Families in Need: Renewable Energy Companies Enter the Mix

As U.S. food assistance programs grapple with overwhelming demand during the coronavirus pandemic, some in New England are finding support from unusual partners—renewable energy companies.

Scratch the surface of these partnerships, however, and the connections begin to make sense. The renewable energy companies are already engaged with the food system, and they’re joining with food relief efforts to connect more deeply with the communities where they do business at a time of crisis.

Take Vanguard Renewables, which has sponsored five milk donations events, donating more than 17,000 gallons of milk to Massachusetts and Rhode Island families in need, in partnership with Dairy Farmers of America (DFA), HP Hood , Guida’s Dairy and various political leaders.

From Waste to Fuel: The Prospects for Renewable Natural Gas in the US

While hydrogen initiatives have been grabbing headlines thanks to large-scale national plans and projects at corporate level, renewable natural gas (RNG) also deserves attention as an emerging tool for decarbonization.

RNG comes from capturing biogas from areas like landfills and farms and then cleaning and upgrading that gas to remove excess carbon dioxide to then turn it into biomethane, which is more commonly referred to as RNG. This process is needed to bring the methane portion of biogas to a level that can then be blended with conventional natural gas on existing pipeline infrastructure, to avoid diminishing the quality or heat content of the pipeline.

DTE Energy Vows Net Zero Natural Gas by 2050

DTE Energy’s natural gas business will achieve “net zero” emissions by 2050, the company announced today.

The move, which DTE officials say will reduce greenhouse gas emissions within its 1.3 million-customer natural gas business by more than 6 million metric tons a year, comes months after the company vowed that its electric company will go net zero by 2050. It also comes in the wake of controversy over DTE’s long-term vision for meeting its electricity customers’ energy needs.

SoCalGas, PG&E and Opus 12 Announce Advancements in Technology that Converts Carbon Dioxide to RNG

Southern California Gas Co. (SoCalGas), Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E), and Opus 12 today announced they have demonstrated further advancement of a new electrochemical technology that converts the carbon dioxide content in raw biogas to pipeline-quality renewable natural gas, a critical improvement in the science of upgrading waste emissions to renewable gas. The single-step process is designed to use renewable electricity, and thus also provides a way for long-term storage of excess wind and solar power. The twelve-month research and development effort was funded by SoCalGas and PG&E and builds on the success of an initial feasibility study in 2018

Raw biogas is produced from the anaerobic breakdown of waste from sources like landfills, sewage, and dairy farms. It contains roughly 60 percent methane (the main component of natural gas), and 40 percent carbon dioxide. While current biogas upgrading technology removes the carbon dioxide from biogas, this new technology captures the carbon dioxide and converts it into additional renewable fuel.

City of Boulder & Wester Disposal Partner to Cut Transportation Emissions By more than 2700 Metric Tons Per Year

The City of Boulder has finalized an agreement with Western Disposal for the sale of renewable natural gas (RNG) generated at the city’s Water Resources Recovery Facility (WRRF).

The RNG, which will be produced from biogas, will fuel up to 38 of the 56 commercial vehicles Western Disposal uses to serve Boulder and Broomfield Counties. Converting to RNG is expected to reduce county-wide carbon emissions by the equivalent of 265,000 gallons of diesel fuel per year.

New RNG Facility Proposed at County Landfill to Convert RNG to Electricity

Chautauqua County is looking to sell natural gas generated at the county landfill to a third party instead of trying to convert it to electricity themselves.

According to a memorandum from Stephen M. Abdella, county attorney, to the legislature and county executive, “the county owns and operates a landfill gas-to-energy generating facility at the county landfill that has provided substantial net revenues to the county since 2010. However, the depressed market conditions for sale of electricity generated by landfill gas have caused a significant reduction in the revenues received by the county, and it is now more advantageous to directly sell the landfill gas to a third party who will convert it to renewable natural gas (RNG).”

Vanguard Renewables Converts Beer Into Renewable Energy

In the concert halls, stadiums and bars across the U.S. that have fallen silent during the coronavirus pandemic, an unusual problem has emerged: what to do with the vast quantity of beer that’s gone past its sell-by date.

In March, even before the lockdowns became widespread, about 10 million gallons of beer held by retailers had already expired, according to estimates from the National Beer Wholesalers Association. As thousands of kegs are now being returned to distributors daily, Vanguard Renewables in Wellesley, Massachusetts, is among companies seeking to make use of it by turning the beverage into natural gas for electricity generation. Others will use it to make hand sanitizer, but a great deal of the beer will simply be decanted and dumped.

U.S. Gain Completes Construction on Natural Gas Fueling Station

U.S. Gain, a company that specializes in the development, procurement and distribution of alternative fuel for the transportation market, has completed the construction of a private natural gas fueling station for Testa Produce Inc. The new modular station will supply fuel for the company’s fleet of delivery vehicles at its headquarters in Chicago.

Testa operates a fleet of 50 delivery vehicles that are used to transport fresh produce to restaurants, hotels, hospitals, schools, country clubs and other business segments throughout Illinois and regions of Indiana and Wisconsin. Today, 40 of their vehicles run on natural gas, with plans to convert the remainder of their fleet in the future.

City of Boulder Partners with Tetra Tech and CGRS for Biogas Enhancement Project

Biogas produced from wastewater digesters will be converted into renewable natural gas (RNG) for vehicle fuel, delivered to community partners for use after injection into the Public Service Company of Colorado (PSCo) pipeline. Construction began in January and is scheduled for completion later this summer.

The city has contracted with Tetra Tech and CGRS, Inc. to design and build the biogas-to-renewable-natural-gas (RNG)-conditioning system, which will replace the WRRF’s cogeneration system, which is at the end of its useful service life. The project is one of only a handful of similar projects in Colorado.
