New York's largest wastewater plant city's hottest Valentine's Day spot

New York City's hottest Valentine's Day spot isn't a fancy restaurant, Central Park, or the top of Empire State Building — it's apparently the city's largest sewage plant.

The city's Newtown Creek Wastewater Resource Recovery Facility, located in the Greenpoint neighborhood of Brooklyn, sold out of Valentine's Day tours in just 16 minutes in January, according to CBS News.

The tours, which are being held ahead of Valentine's Day on February 9, feature an overview of the plant's wastewater treatment process and a visit to the facility's 120-foot high observation deck, located on top of its iconic digester eggs.

CenterPoint Energy's Plan for Affordable Renewable Utility Sources

The state's largest natural gas utility, CenterPoint Energy, is proposing state legislation allowing it to more easily launch clean-energy initiatives that would be partly funded by ratepayers.

Under the legislation unveiled Thursday, a natural gas utility could submit an "alternative resource plan" to the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission (PUC). Such plans would include renewable natural gas — gas created from landfills, sewage and livestock manure — as well as new technologies like carbon capture and hydrogen gas production.

M.J. Bradley Report: RNG essential for GHG reductions in Northeast, Mid-Atlantic

M.J. Bradley & Associates published a report evaluating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions scenarios in medium- and heavy-duty on-road vehicles, and residential and commercial heating, for a 12-state region stretching from Virginia to Maine.  Renewable biofuels, renewable natural gas (RNG) and biomass-based diesel, were shown to significantly reduce GHG emissions that electrification and efficiency measures alone don’t reach, even under moderately aggressive scenarios. The report concluded that a complementary, portfolio strategy for GHG emissions will yield the best results for Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states.

“The report demonstrates that even aggressive efforts to electrify transportation and heating will need to be matched with aggressive adoption of renewable natural gas,” said Johannes Escudero, CEO of the Coalition for Renewable Natural Gas. “We are poised to deliver increasing volumes of RNG to meet the needs of Northeastern and Mid-Atlantic customers while driving down GHG emissions.

National Study Supports NW Natural’s Renewable Plans

Northwest Natural Gas Company, dba NW Natural, a wholly owned subsidiary of Northwest Natural Holding Company (NYSE: NWN), has co-sponsored a first-of-its-kind national study that shows the immense availability of renewable natural gas and its potential to drastically curb greenhouse gas emissions in the fight against climate change.

Renewable natural gas has similar climate benefits to wind and solar energy and is produced from local organic materials like food, agricultural and forestry waste, wastewater, and landfills. With advancements in conditioning equipment, now the gasses from these waste streams can be cleaned up and put into NW Natural’s existing pipeline network - one of the tightest, most modern in the U.S. - to serve homes and businesses.

Brightmark Energy to Build South Dakota’s First-Ever Dairy Renewable Natural Gas Project

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Brightmark, a San Francisco-based waste and energy development company, announced today that it has signed a manure supply agreement with two South Dakota dairy companies, Boadwine Farms, Inc. and Mooody County Dairy Limited Partnership, to capture methane produced by nearly 12,000 dairy cows and heifers and convert it into renewable natural gas. The project is anticipated to produce 217,000 MMBtu of renewable natural gas each year, which is equivalent to the amount of gas needed to drive 2,492 vehicles for a full year. Brightmark is developing the project, and the company will also own and operate it upon completion.

The Athena renewable natural gas (RNG) project will include the construction of new anaerobic digesters on three Minnehaha County farms: Boadwine Farms, Pioneer Dairy, and Moody Dairy. The 11,710 dairy cows and heifers that live on these farms produce a total of 55.6 million gallons of manure each year. After the project is complete, the methane generated by this manure will be captured, cleaned, and converted into RNG, which can be used for transportation, cooking, or electricity. The gas will be injected into the local interstate pipeline system for use statewide.
