Kinetrex will Supply UPS Trucks with 52.5 million gallons of Renewable Natural Gas

Kinetrex Energy and UPS jointly announced they have entered into a 6-year renewable natural gas (RNG) supply agreement. The agreement will supply UPS with up to 52.5 million gallons of RNG to be used in Class 8 vehicles throughout the Midwest from its Indianapolis RNG plant. The RNG will be used to fuel UPS’ LNG-powered fleets in Chicago, Toledo, Columbus, St. Louis and Indianapolis. The agreement also allows Kinetrex to supply UPS an additional 50 million gallons over the same period as Kinetrex develops additional RNG plants.

“This is an exciting day for our city as one of our local companies, Kinetrex Energy, partners with global shipper UPS to improve the air quality in central Indiana,” said Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett. “The renewable natural gas project on the south side will create several high-paying jobs. We are pleased to see a homegrown-Indianapolis company spearheading this effort.”

M.J. Bradley Report: RNG essential for GHG reductions in Northeast, Mid-Atlantic

M.J. Bradley & Associates published a report evaluating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions scenarios in medium- and heavy-duty on-road vehicles, and residential and commercial heating, for a 12-state region stretching from Virginia to Maine.  Renewable biofuels, renewable natural gas (RNG) and biomass-based diesel, were shown to significantly reduce GHG emissions that electrification and efficiency measures alone don’t reach, even under moderately aggressive scenarios. The report concluded that a complementary, portfolio strategy for GHG emissions will yield the best results for Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states.

“The report demonstrates that even aggressive efforts to electrify transportation and heating will need to be matched with aggressive adoption of renewable natural gas,” said Johannes Escudero, CEO of the Coalition for Renewable Natural Gas. “We are poised to deliver increasing volumes of RNG to meet the needs of Northeastern and Mid-Atlantic customers while driving down GHG emissions.

National Study Supports NW Natural’s Renewable Plans

Northwest Natural Gas Company, dba NW Natural, a wholly owned subsidiary of Northwest Natural Holding Company (NYSE: NWN), has co-sponsored a first-of-its-kind national study that shows the immense availability of renewable natural gas and its potential to drastically curb greenhouse gas emissions in the fight against climate change.

Renewable natural gas has similar climate benefits to wind and solar energy and is produced from local organic materials like food, agricultural and forestry waste, wastewater, and landfills. With advancements in conditioning equipment, now the gasses from these waste streams can be cleaned up and put into NW Natural’s existing pipeline network - one of the tightest, most modern in the U.S. - to serve homes and businesses.

Brightmark Energy to Build South Dakota’s First-Ever Dairy Renewable Natural Gas Project

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Brightmark, a San Francisco-based waste and energy development company, announced today that it has signed a manure supply agreement with two South Dakota dairy companies, Boadwine Farms, Inc. and Mooody County Dairy Limited Partnership, to capture methane produced by nearly 12,000 dairy cows and heifers and convert it into renewable natural gas. The project is anticipated to produce 217,000 MMBtu of renewable natural gas each year, which is equivalent to the amount of gas needed to drive 2,492 vehicles for a full year. Brightmark is developing the project, and the company will also own and operate it upon completion.

The Athena renewable natural gas (RNG) project will include the construction of new anaerobic digesters on three Minnehaha County farms: Boadwine Farms, Pioneer Dairy, and Moody Dairy. The 11,710 dairy cows and heifers that live on these farms produce a total of 55.6 million gallons of manure each year. After the project is complete, the methane generated by this manure will be captured, cleaned, and converted into RNG, which can be used for transportation, cooking, or electricity. The gas will be injected into the local interstate pipeline system for use statewide.

Waste Management CEO Projects Fleet 75% Renewable CNG in 2021

Waste Management's 10th annual sustainability forum, hosted in conjunction with its sponsorship of the Phoenix Open golf tournament, was a continuation of the company's effort to be a "thought leader" in the industry around environmental and social topics. While the value of such a showcase may be rising amid investor interest in climate issues, it's often still hard to gauge exactly what this event means in terms of business strategy compared to other large competitors.

Fleet investment is one tangible metric showing how Waste Management plans to mark progress on its pledge to offset four times the amount of GHG it generates from operations. According to the company's latest sustainability update, 2018 fleet emissions were down by 30% against a 2010 baseline. Waste Management seeks to hit a 45% reduction by 2038.

UPS Builds on RNG Momentum with Kinetrex Energy & TruStar Energy

UPS (NYSE: UPS) today announced it has entered into multi-year renewable natural gas (RNG) agreements with Kinetrex Energy and TruStar Energy. Together, these two contracts will supply UPS with up to 80 million gallon equivalents (GEs) of RNG over the terms of the agreements.

“The use of RNG is a very important part of UPS’s strategy to increase alternative fuel consumption to be 40% of total ground fuel purchases by 2025,” said Mike Whitlatch, vice president of global energy and procurement, UPS. “We are using both liquid natural gas (LNG) and compressed natural gas (CNG) as bridging fuels to increase our use of RNG. This will have a measurable impact as RNG yields up to a 90% reduction in lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions when compared to conventional diesel. Using RNG is what will ultimately help UPS meet its 2025 sustainability goals.”

Vashon Island’s Farming Community Reducing Food Waste with Waste-to-Energy Practices

Island farmers, entrepreneurs and residents spent a few hours at Matsuda Farm and Island Spring Organics this past Monday learning how they could improve their crops or business practices through new environmental sustainability efforts.

Those efforts are thanks to Impact Bioenergy, an Auburn-based company that manufactures modular systems to convert food waste into plant food and low-carbon energy. Last year, it installed an anaerobic digester at Island Spring Organics’ tofu factory and started conducting crop trials at Matsuda Farm. While the factory has been using Impact Bioenergy’s anaerobic digester to take food waste and convert it into bio-fertilizer, Matsuda Farm has used that fertilizer on its fields.

Clean Energy Reduced 745,000 Metric Tons of GHG with Renewable Natural Gas

Clean Energy Fuels Corp. (NASDAQ: CLNE) today announced it delivered 143 million gallons of Redeem™ Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) last year as robust sales of the carbon-neutral transportation fuel continued in 2019, closing out the year with significant deals throughout North America.

The environmental impact of replacing 143 million gallons of diesel fuel with RNG is the equivalent of reducing 745,000 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions—also equal to planting 12 million trees, or removing 158,000 cars off the road, or reducing 260,000 tons of waste that would otherwise be sent to the landfill.
