Smithfield, together with Duke Energy, Completes RNG distribution system in North Carolina
Smithfield Foods Inc. announced on Jan. 8 that it is now producing renewable natural gas (RNG) from the wastewater treatment system at its Tar Heel, North Carolina, pork processing plant.
The company partnered with Duke Energy and OptimaBio LLC, a bioenergy project developer, to complete the project that will help power 2,000 homes and businesses in the area.
Smithfield said the project cost $14 million to complete and will help the company’s overall goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions 25 percent by 2025.
With its alliance with Duke Energy, roughly 140,000 dekatherms of RNG per year will be transported to natural gas plants and used to generate electricity for people.

Utah Think Tank says State Should Cut CO2 Emissions 80% by 2050
Utah should strive to slash air pollution by half and carbon dioxide emissions by 80% in coming decades, a goal that would demand commitment from government leaders, industry and each state resident, the Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute argues.
The University of Utah think tank on Monday published a draft road map for cleaning up the air and confronting climate change in the state. What’s at stake is the health of Utahns, the welfare of the state’s economy and the viability of a 2030 or 2034 Olympic bid, according to the institute.

New York League of Conservation Voters Launches Clean Fuels NY Coalition
A coalition led by the New York League of Conservation Voters is launching a campaign on Monday meant to push for clean fuel policy in New York.
The groups comprise a range of industries and advocacy issues, including the environmental, public health, scientists, car manufacturers and clean fuel providers.
In particular, the groups want the passage of a low carbon fuel standard for New York’s largest greenhouse gas emissions source: the transportation sector.
The hope is that by having transportation fuel providers adhere to low carbon sources, there would be a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions as a result.

Renewable Natural Gas Creating Opportunity to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Consumers are now shifting away from fossil fuels for their heating and energy needs and moving toward more renewable forms of energy. At the same time, governments are handing down tighter emissions regulations to many of the world’s most carbon-intensive industries.
While wind and solar power are typically at the forefront of the renewable energy mix, renewable natural gas (RNG) is also increasingly being used as an alternative to fossil fuels. Derived from biogas captured at organic waste facilities, RNG can be easily deployed to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the two most critical industries in the fight against climate change: utilities and transportation.

RNG: A Growing Sustainable Energy Source in British Columbia
After the uncertain rise and precipitous fall of a number of Canada’s energy-from-waste (EfW) industries, it may have been easy to underestimate the commercial opportunities for renewable natural gas (RNG).
After all, the corporate community lost much of its interest in capital intensive and technologically uncertain EfW projects at some point following the 2008 crash. With a few notable exceptions, EfW became a local, and mostly municipal, waste management issue, usually undertaken on a small scale. This has been quietly, yet rapidly, changing with the growth of RNG and the related environmental pressures for more resource recovery.

Greenlane Secures New $8.3 Million Biogas Upgrading Contract for Landfill Gas to RNG Project in California
Greenlane Renewables Inc. (“Greenlane”) (TSXV:GRN) today announced that its wholly-owned subsidiary, Greenlane Biogas North America Ltd., has secured a new $8.3 million (US$6.3 million) biogas upgrading contract with a customer in California, whose name is being withheld at this time for confidentiality reasons. Engineering work will begin immediately on the California-based landfill project. Order fulfilment will begin immediately upon completion of permitting and approval of submittals by the customer, expected by early to mid 2020, with delivery expected to occur within approximately six months of commencement.

Gov. Inslee Sees Need For A Low-carbon Fuel Standard in Washington
Washington Gov. Jay Inslee on Thursday laid out another set of ambitious policy priorities to reduce the state’s greenhouse gas emissions, focusing this legislative session on transforming the state’s carbon-laden transportation system.
The governor, during a morning news conference in Olympia, asked the Legislature to pass a low-carbon fuel standard, a requirement for ride-hailing companies to reduce their greenhouse-gas emissions, a bill to create a zero-emission vehicle program and legislation to “align Washington’s emission targets with the latest science,” which would make them more ambitious.

Report Supports National Grid’s Vision for Lower Carbon Gas Network
National Grid is encouraged by a first-of-its-kind study that shows the availability of renewable natural gas (RNG) and its potential to drastically curb greenhouse gas emissions in the fight against climate change.
RNG is pipeline-compatible gaseous fuel derived from biogenic or other renewable sources that have lower lifecycle carbon dioxide equivalent emissions than geological natural gas. The study, co-sponsored by National Grid and other utilities, and conducted by ICF in partnership with the American Gas Foundation, estimates that by 2040, about 4,513 trillion British thermal units (Btus) of RNG could be produced annually, at a competitive cost. This measurement of RNG Btus, a universally accepted measurement of the heating value of gas, represents a 95 percent reduction in natural gas emissions from the residential sector and enough production to meet all U.S. residential heating demand.

A Year of 100% Renewables: Clean Energy, Storage and Renewable Gas
In clean energy circles, 2019 may be remembered as the "Year of 100 Percent." Five states plus Puerto Rico passed laws in 2019 targeting 100% clean energy, while dozens of corporations and utilities made voluntary pledges.
Amid federal inaction despite increasingly visible climate impacts and overwhelming scientific consensus, clean energy's current hold on the public imagination is undeniably a bright spot.

New Jersey Natural Gas Announces 100% Renewable Offset of Its Facility and Fleet Natural Gas Emissions
Continuing its leadership on corporate sustainability and reducing emissions, New Jersey Natural Gas (NJNG) today announced it has completely offset its facility and fleet use of natural gas with renewable energy. By purchasing Renewable Natural Gas Attributes (RNGAs), renewable energy credits generated from the production of Renewable Natural Gas (RNG), all emissions from natural gas use at its facilities and from the use of its Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) fleet vehicles are being offset.
The volume of emissions offset through the purchase is the equivalent of supplying the natural gas needs of more than 400 homes for an entire year.
