City of Phoenix to Purchase RNG Fueled Trucks with EPA Grant
Garbage collection in Phoenix is about to get more environmentally friendly.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recently awarded the Phoenix Public Works Department with a $1 million Diesel Emissions Reduction Act (DERA) grant to help to replace its diesel-fueled trucks with lower-emissions vehicles, according to a press release.
The grant will be combined with $2.1 million in matching funds from the department and a private partner to purchase 10 trucks – nine for solid waste collection and one for long haul – that run on compressed natural gas.

Demand For Renewable Fuel Continues, Highlighted By 6.8 Million Gallons Of New Contracts; Expansions At Ports Of LA And Long Beach
Clean Energy Fuels Corp. (CLNE) today announced new fuel, construction and service agreements as more fleets convert from diesel to Redeem ™ Renewable Natural Gas (RNG), a transportation fuel made from organic waste that not only addresses short-term air quality issues caused by diesel, but is a carbon-neutral alternative that greatly reduces the amount of greenhouse gas produced by vehicles.
Clean Energy has begun a major fueling infrastructure upgrade for trucks operating in the Port of Los Angeles and Port of Long Beach. The upgrade will increase the availability of Redeem at the nation’s largest alternative fuel station in America’s largest port complex. The first phase of the project, which has been completed, delivers renewable compressed natural gas (CNG) through six new dispensers. Phase two, which will install new compressors and associated equipment to improve the performance and efficiency of the station, is scheduled for summer 2020.

Brightmark Energy Seeks Communities for Recycling
San Francisco waste and energy company Brightmark Energy announced this week it will invest $500 million to $1 billion each to build new plastic recycling plants in select U.S. cities.
Brightmark, founded in 2016 with an initial $250 million investment from Jackson Investment Group, is hunting the U.S. for suitable locations to scale its recycling model and divert hundreds of thousands of tons of plastic waste from landfills and the ocean.

RNG Plant to Turn Landfill Gas Into Fuel
Work is underway on what Indianapolis-based Kinetrex Energy says will be the largest renewable natural gas (RNG) project in Indiana. Chief Executive Officer Aaron Johnson says the project is the latest sign that Indiana is becoming a national leader in renewable fuels.
Kinetrex is working with Australia-based sustainable energy producer EDL and South Side Landfill of Indianapolis on the $25 million project. The companies say, when complete, the facility on the south side of Indianapolis will turn methane produced by the landfill into about 8 million gallons of RNG each year in a process they say will reduce greenhouse gas emissions, create a renewable energy resource and lower fuel costs. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says methane is up to 36 times stronger than carbon dioxide.

John Lewis Delivery Trucks to Run on RNG
Hundreds of John Lewis delivery trucks will begin running on cow power from 2021 as the retailer weans its fleet off polluting diesel fuel and switches to carbon-neutral cow manure.
The retailer will begin using renewable biomethane made from manure slurry for almost 300 John Lewis and Waitrose delivery vans under new plans from its fuel supplier to swap rotting vegetables for poo power at no extra cost.
John Lewis currently runs 80 vans on biomethane from food waste, but plans to expand its green fleet by up to 200 vans within the next 18 months before switching to manure.

Dane County Landfill Facility to Fuel Ho-Chunk Gaming Madison's First RNG Maintenance Truck
Ho-Chunk Gaming Madison is excited to announce that for the first time they are now using Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) to power one of their Maintenance trucks.
During Earth Week in April of this year the Dane County Landfill Biogas Facility opened a $28 million plant as the first of its kind in the United States. The plant converts the collected methane into compressed natural gas (CNG) which is then injected into its pipeline. It turns decomposed waste (and cow manure) into renewable fuel which can be bought and sold.

CNG Fuels Plans to Become the UK’s First Supplier of Carbon-neutral fuel for HGVs, using RNG
CNG Fuels today (7 Nov) has announced plans to become the UK’s first supplier of carbon-neutral fuel for HGVs, using manure to help fleet operators achieve Net Zero emissions.
The company is also consulting on how its network of refueling stations can best accommodate low-carbon hydrogen and battery electric technologies for HGVs, so that it can support customers when these become commercially viable.
Philip Fjeld, CEO of CNG Fuels, said: “We want to help decarbonize freight transport and enable fleet operators to meet Net Zero targets now, supporting the UK’s climate targets.

Aerial methane survey finds a fraction of point sources responsible for more than a third of California’s methane emissions
An article published in the current issue of the journal Nature highlights the high-tech efforts and important findings of the California Air Resources Board, California Energy Commission and NASA to pinpoint emissions of the climate super pollutant methane. The results will be used to help state and local agencies and businesses prioritize investments to reduce emissions.
From August 2016 to October 2018, NASA, through a contract with the two state agencies, flew remote sensing equipment over selected portions of the state. Hundreds of methane point sources were identified during the California Methane Survey, including “super-emitters,” sources responsible for an outsized proportion of the total methane released into the atmosphere.
