Hydrogen the next big opportunity for Xebec

Headquartered in Quebec, Canada, Xebec is a leader in providing solutions for gas purification and conditioning in the renewable energy and industrial space.

The core of its capabilities lies with its unique pressure swing adsorption (PSA) units which are based on proprietary rotary valve technology.

Currently seeing growth coming from the global demand for gas purification solutions for the biogas to renewable natural gas market, Dr. Prabhu Rao, Chief Operating Officer, sees hydrogen as the next big opportunity.

“Hydrogen is quickly emerging as a fuel or energy carrier, and the quality of this fuel is critical to the end-use applications,” he tells H2 View.

Toronto Garbage Trucks Will Soon Be Powered by RNG From the Very Food Scraps That They Collect

All of the garbage trucks in Toronto will soon be powered by the biogas produced from the very trash they collect.

Toronto is set to be one of the first cities in North America to launch such an initiative, thanks to the their newly-constructed Dufferin Solid Waste Management Facility.

Starting in March 2020, the city’s fleet of garbage trucks will collect all of the organic waste and flood scraps from the Toronto Green Bins and bring them to the facility for processing. The facility will then use anaerobic digesters to capture all of the biogas produced by the waste and transform it into renewable natural gas (RNG).

CA Dairy Farms Reach Milestone in Climate Goal

The California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) reported this month that California’s dairy farms will soon be more than halfway to achieving the state’s world-leading target for reducing methane. The update was part of CDFA’s announcement that an additional $102 million has been awarded this year to support the implementation of dairy methane reduction projects. Ninety-three new projects were funded, including 43 methane digesters that capture methane and 50 alternative manure management projects. There are currently more than 229 dairy methane reduction projects in operation or under development on California dairy farms.

Through the implementation of these projects, CDFA estimates 2.2 million metric tons of greenhouse gases will be reduced each year. That’s approximately 25 percent of the 2013 California inventory for dairy and livestock manure methane emissions. The state’s target is a 40 percent reduction below 2013 levels by 2030. In total, the state has now invested $260 million in dairy methane reduction projects. California’s dairy farm families and other investors have matched that with more than $360 million in private funding.

Philadelphians Can Opt for Renewable Natural Gas come January

Philadelphia residents can choose different suppliers for natural gas to cook with and heat their homes. But if their choice is renewable natural gas, they’ve had no options.

Until now. Starting in January, everyone in the city will be able to opt for renewable gas.

“We’ve been working with PGW over the last several months to finally bring renewable natural gas to the PGW service territory here in Philadelphia,” said Ronald Fisher, who heads the Energy Co-op, a nonprofit cooperative that’s turning 40 this year.

RNG Start-up Company Completes Key Milestone Converting Alberta Forest Residues into Pipeline-quality Gas

An innovative clean energy start-up company, G4 Insights Inc., has successfully demonstrated in a field trial that forestry industry residues can be turned into renewable natural gas (RNG). Their RNG technology demonstration project has been supported by a federal-provincial-industry partnership with the common goal of clean energy distribution into homes, businesses and industry connected to the natural gas infrastructure system.

The federal-provincial-industry consortium includes Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), the Natural Gas Innovation Fund (NGIF), Alberta Innovates (AI), ATCO and FPInnovations, who have collectively invested a total of $2.8 million in grants and in-kind, for the testing and demonstration of G4 Insights' PyroCatalytic Hydrogenation (PCH) technology.

Vermont Gas & NG Advantage Partner to Offer First RNG Product to Industrial Users & Hospitals Across the Northeast

Vermont Gas (VGS) and NG Advantage (NGA) announced today a first-of-its-kind initiative to deliver renewable natural gas (RNG) to business and institutional customers – including hospitals – through VGS’ pipeline and NGA’s virtual pipeline infrastructure. This unique partnership allows NGA’s twenty-six current customers and new customers across New England and New York to take advantage of RNG, a benefit that  until now has only been available to pipeline-connected users. Before NGA began service in 2013, these customers used No. 2 and No. 6 oil and some even used “bunker fuel” for their process and/or space-heating energy needs. By switching to compressed natural gas, they immediately lowered their carbon footprint by 26%. Renewable natural gas enables customers to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) even further.

FortisBC & City of Vancouver Approved to Produce Landfill waste-to-RNG, to be Largest RNG Project in B.C.

FortisBC and the City of Vancouver have received regulatory approval from the British Columbia Utilities Commission to produce Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) at the City's landfill in Delta. This project aligns with the City's and FortisBC's shared commitment to develop more renewable energy and support the broader greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction goals outlined in the province's CleanBC strategy.

"This new and substantial supply will bring us closer to our target of having 15 per cent of our gas supply be renewable by 2030―a key deliverable within our 30BY30 Target to reduce our customers' greenhouse gas emissions by 30 per cent by 2030," said Douglas Stout, vice-president of external relations and market development, FortisBC. "This is our largest RNG project to date and the RNG generated from the landfill will be delivered into the local natural gas distribution system as a renewable source of energy."
