New York state will soon require large generators of food waste donate what they can to those in need and compost the rest. The mandate won't go into effect until 2022, but work is already underway in the Mohawk Valley to meet this new recycling challenge.

Operators champion landfill gas as a source of renewable energy and revenue. But as communities seek to divert more organics and climate anxiety intensifies, the practice has been decried as greenwashing.
The full story of landfill gas (LFG) is complicated.
Capturing LFG creates beneficial use opportunities and earns operators revenue, in addition to reducing the global warming potential of the gas that is successfully captured. However, the system may be imperfect from an economic and environmental standpoint. Other forms of electricity generation from waste have efficiency advantages, and the ability of LFG capture systems to effectively mitigate net greenhouse gas emissions is contested.

Xebec Announces Inclusion in DOE Project to Enable Economical Biomethane Production

Minneapolis-based M-RETS Renewable Energy Certificates Program Includes RNG
North America’s first pilot project allowing companies to claim environmental credits for renewable natural gas may be a boon for utilities providing home heating.
The Minneapolis-based Midwest Renewable Energy Tracking System (M-RETS) will begin in July creating “renewable energy certificates” (RECs) produced from the manufacture of renewable natural gas — methane captured from landfills, sewage plants, farms, and other sources. In the past, the credits have been mainly awarded for solar, wind and hydropower in the electric sector.

GESS International to Construct Fifth Biogas Upgrading Plant in Missouri
GESS International, a highly experienced and globally established renewable energy company, previously announced plans to construct four green energy biogas plants across Missouri in March 2019. Among the Missouri developments there will now be an additional facility built in Chariton County, Missouri.
The new $40 million investment will create 21 new jobs for the surrounding community. On an annual basis, this Biogas facility will convert 140,000 tons of cattle and swine manure and 70,000 tons of agricultural residues into 550,000 MMbtu worth of renewable natural gas (RNG). This output is enough to power 6,800 homes for one year, while reducing methane emissions and any potential environmental impacts from local farm operations.

BIO World Congress Eyes Taking Low-Carbon Fuel Standards Beyond California
The uncertainty of the federal Renewable Fuels Standard and political fights with the petroleum industry are giving more weight to the need for major biofuel states to consider their own low-carbon fuel standards.
After years of pushing for a federal low-carbon fuels standard, the Governors' Biofuels Coalition is turning more attention to states with governors who want to reduce greenhouse gas emissions or governors in states with large renewable fuel industries, said Larry Pearce, executive director of the coalition.

RNG Now Available in New York City as Clean Energy Opens Fueling Station in The South Bronx
-Clean Energy Fuels Corp. (Nasdaq: CLNE), the leading provider of natural gas fuel for transportation in North America, welcomed city officials, community leaders, and environmental advocates to the opening of its newest natural gas fueling station in Hunts Point—the first station in New York City to exclusively offer renewable natural gas (RNG) for medium- and heavy-duty vehicle fleets.

E ON Provides 100% Renewable Electricity for All 3.3 million Customer Homes
E.ON today announced it is now providing all of its residential customers across Britainwith a 100% renewable electricity supply on all tariffs as standard, and at no extra cost.
The change means more than 3.3 million homes now have an electricity supply matched by renewable sources including wind, biomass and solar. E.ON's announcement is the largest of its type to date in the UK, significantly increasing the number of households in the country backed by 100% renewable electricity.

Advanced Disposal Shareholders Approve Sale to Waste Management
Advanced Disposal Services is one step closer to completing its sale to Waste Management. Nearly 86% of shareholders approved the deal to sell at $33.15 per share at a special meeting in Ponte Vedra, Florida on Friday.
Ahead of the vote, Advanced also addressed three putative class action lawsuits alleging it had misled investors with insufficient information, allowed the company to be undervalued and limited the potential for higher offers, among other claims. The various suits sought to delay the vote or prohibit the deal.
