By Sutherland.
Last month, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced a host of new incentives to encourage the use of fuels derived from biomass—including biogas that replaces traditional natural gas in the form of compressed natural gas (CNG) or liquefied natural gas (LNG). EPA is planning to develop rules allowing states to rely on biomass obtained from sustainable practices to be used for compliance with its “Clean Power Plan” to cut carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from power generating facilities and exempting certain biomass-based greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from best available control technology requirements when obtaining permits under the Clean Air Act.
Clean energy development is good for Montana
By Mitch Tropila, Great Falls Tribune.
Montana is bursting with opportunity in the clean energy sector.
A recent report showed we can create thousands of jobs by developing our vast renewable energy resources and helping people make their homes and businesses more energy efficient.
An energy efficiency consulting firm commissioned by NorthWestern Energy found that energy efficiency programs save customers about $20 million each year. In terms of job creation, renewable energy in Montana is responsible for creating over 1,300 construction jobs, nearly 100 permanent jobs and generating over $6 million in tax revenue and over $1 billion in new investments. Clean energy is not just good for the environment; it’s good for the economy.
EPA: Nearly 6 million cellulosic RINs generated in November
By Erin Voegele, Biomass Magazine.
The U.S. EPA has released renewable identification number (RIN) data for November, reporting that more than 1.38 billion RINs were generated during the month, including nearly 6 million cellulosic RINs.
According to the EPA, 5.99 million D3 cellulosic biofuel RINs were generated during the month, bringing the total for the first 11 months of the year to 24.13 million. This includes 594,316 D3 RINs generated for cellulosic ethanol, 44,168 D3 RINs generated for renewable gasoline, 10.72 million D3 RINs for renewable compressed natural gas, and 12.78 million D3 RINs for renewable liquefied natural gas. All D3 RINs generated during the first 11 months of 2014 were generated by domestic producers.
Republic Services to Acquire Tervita's U.S.-Based Operations
By David Bodamer, Waste Expo 360.
Phoenix-based Republic Services Inc. and Calgary, Alberta-based Tervita Corp. have entered into a definitive agreement whereby a subsidiary of Republic Services will acquire Tervita LLC, a subsidiary of Tervita Corp. for $485 million.
Tervita is a pure-play environmental waste solutions provider serving oil and natural gas producers in the United States. Tervita's geographic footprint spans across several U.S. oil basins, including the Permian, Eagle Ford and Bakken. Tervita provides oilfield waste services and operates three types of waste management and disposal facilities: treatment, recovery and disposal (TRD) facilities; engineered landfills; and salt water disposal (SWD) injection wells. Additionally, Tervita provides closed loop solids control systems and transportation services.
BioCNG breaks ground on biogas project in Colorado
By BioCNG LLC.
BioCNG LLC announced that it participated in a groundbreaking ceremony to launch the BioCNG biogas conditioning system and gas pipeline for the Persigo wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), in Grand Junction, Colorado. The BioCNG system will produce about 500 gallons of gasoline equivalent per day from the WWTP digester gas, which will be piped in a dedicated pipeline nearly 6 miles on a public roadway right-of-way to Grand Junction's existing compressed natural gas (CNG) fueling station.
The project is jointly owned by the City of Grand Junction and Mesa County, Coloardo, and is scheduled to be completed by April 2015.
Continuing Maryland’s energy boom
By Mike Tidwell, The Washington Post.
Trivia question: What governor signed the first legislation in Maryland to boost solar energy from a cottage industry to a major business in the state? Was it liberal Democrat Parris Glendening? Current Gov. Martin O’Malley, a Democrat? Or conservative Republican Robert Ehrlich?
The answer is Ehrlich, he of the Grand Old Party. In 2004, he signed the wonky-sounding Renewable Portfolio Standard Act. That bill required, for the first time, that a small percentage of Maryland’s electricity come from clean, renewable energy.
NHL goes green with Constellation Energy
By Jeff Barker, The Baltimore Sun
Constellation, a Baltimore-based energy firm, is entering a partnership with the National Hockey League that will promote the company's brand while it works with the league on minimizing the NHL's environmental impact.
Constellation has sponsorship deals with the Ravens and Orioles, among other professional clubs, but this is its first league-wide deal. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Under the deal, Constellation will conduct energy efficiency analyses, recommend energy management strategies at NHL venues, and support development of renewable energy sources. The savings are intended to offset the league's carbon footprint of 550,000 metric tons during the 2014-15 season.
Volvo's Making Trucks With Landfill Gas
By SustainableBusiness.com.
While Volvo works on an emissions-free truck, its Virginia assembly plant is running on 100% renewable energy.
As of November, all the electricity used at Volvo's New River Valley assembly plant comes from methane gas captured from 13 landfills in the region. The company produces all its trucks for North America there.
"The trash of the past is the methane gas that fuels our plant today," says Franky Marchand, General Manager of the factory. And thanks to extensive recycling, the plant sends no waste to landfills.

Iogen's Advanced Cellulosic Biofuel Technology Reaches Critical Production Milestone
By Iogen Corporation, MarketWired.
Iogen Corporation, a leading developer of cellulosic biofuel technology, and Raízen, one of the world's largest producers of sugarcane ethanol, are pleased today to announce they have begun production of cellulosic ethanol on schedule at Raízen's newly expanded Costa Pinto sugar cane mill in Piracicaba, São Paulo, Brazil.
Raízen broke ground on the $US100 million "biomass-to-ethanol" expansion just over one year ago. The new facility will convert biomass such as sugar cane bagasse and straw into 40 million litres per year of advanced, second generation cellulosic biofuel. It will also be the first large-scale commercial implementation of Iogen Energy's cellulosic ethanol technology, which the company developed and has extensively proven in its Ottawa demonstration facility.
