Industry Bodies Urge GHG Protocol to Account for Market Realities

A coalition of industry bodies is calling on the GHG Protocol, the world’s most widely used greenhouse gas accounting standard, to better account for market realities in its methodology. Under the GHG Protocol, the climate impact of biomethane depends on how the gas is produced, delivered, and claimed, taking into account lifecycle emissions. The groups argue that current guidance leaves many companies without a clear framework for market-based accounting, an issue with significant implications for how renewable natural gas and other low-carbon energy attributes are recognized and credited.
