Japan’s Biggest Airlines Warn of Crisis Without More SAF

Japan’s two largest carriers, All Nippon Airways (ANA) and Japan Airlines (JAL), have jointly published their second SAF report — titled Toward Net Zero CO2 Emissions from Air Transport in 2050 — warning that the aviation industry faces a looming crisis if sustainable fuel production and cost reductions don’t accelerate significantly before 2030. SAF represented just 0.6% of global aviation fuel consumption as of 2025. The airlines are calling for a society-wide Co-creation Model in which SAF adoption costs are shared across government, industry, and travelers — framing the fuel supply challenge as a matter of Japan’s economic security.
